As I’ve grown older, I have come to appreciate the finer things in life . . . like kitchen storage. Like Momma said, you can never have enough.
That’s why I’m completely enamored with the Smart Spin, a nifty little “As Seen On TV” contraption that gives you ample storage for food along with ample cabinet space. We got one as a wedding present (thanks, Jon & Debra!!), and I can vouch that it totally rocks. Here’s what it looks like:
The Smart Spin is essentially a lazy susan with four compartments on top that house three sizes of plastic food containers and one-size-fits all lids – brilliant!! I love that (most of) my food storage needs are knocked out by this one little gizmo that only takes up one side of one shelf in my kitchen cabinet, AND is self-containing so that I don’t have a ridiculous mess of plastic containers falling out every time I open the cabinet. And if that wasn’t enough, the lazy susan is built on top of a base so that the contraption can slide out about four inches, giving you enough room to remove the taller containers without hitting the bottom of the shelf above – perfect!!! Let’s see this baby in action:
Great, right? The plastic also seems to be pretty stain-resistant – we’ve been using it almost daily for about a year and a half and while it doesn’t look brand new it looks pretty darn close. The plastic lazy susan contraption is also sturdy, and spins and extends as well as it did the day we (and by “we” I mean the hubby) put it together. (And if I remember correctly, putting that sucker together was quite a doozy).
The containers aren’t huge, but they are big enough to store most foods that my husband and I seem to need to store – leftover macaroni and cheese, sauces, etc. As you can see below, the biggest container is about the size of a water glass (and if you look closely you can also see the built-in measuring system on the side of the container):
If you need to store tons of large food, you may need to invest in a few larger plastic containers to supplement your Smart Spin collection.
All in all, we’ve been blissfully pleased with our 49-pieces-of-heaven, and I sing its praises to pretty much anyone who will listen. Do you have any smart storage solutions to share??

I love my smart spin! I LOVE not having tons and tons of mismatched containers.
OK, I don’t have the Smart Spin, but my husband got sick of the entire cupboard full of mismatched storage containers in a big mess. So, a couple years ago he had this great idea to buy different heights of containers all with the same lid, so even if one container loses its lid, the rother lids will still match AND they all stack inside one another and all the lids can stack on top or next to them. It’s the same idea, except we use the cheapo Ziploc containers, so we can send leftovers home with family and friends without worrying about whether we’ll get them back. Hubby and I both get giddy whenever we see others swapping their masses of containers for those that can neatly stack and all use the same lid! Love it!
