The Amazing Clutter Buster

It’s been around for awhile, but I am seriously lusting after Ikea’s Expedit bookcase.  It comes in a bunch of different sizes and colors, as you can see below:

These nifty bookcases range in price from $59.99 for the smallest to $229 for the large TV stand, so these babies provide ridiculous amounts of storage on the cheap.  They would be perfect in any bedroom for folded clothes or baskets of socks, as a pantry, in a garage, as a home office, in a craft room, or in a kid’s playroom.

But don’t be fooled – these bookcases aren’t just about functionality – they also give you a great opportunity to really show your stuff and spice up any room.  Check out how these bookcases can really become a feature and focal point of any room with just a little creativity:

Got any creative ideas for using an Expedit bookshelf?  I’m thinking it would make an awesome headboard . . . no need for nightstands, books are right where you need’em . . . what can you come up with?

I’m addicted to these type of bookshelves!

I love the POTENTIAL of this piece, particularly the one with the most shelves! I can see putting the piece on a short, same width base and using it as a display case for art, or using it flat on the floor with a same size base with plexiglass on the top and having it as a display case/coffee table. I love “stuff,” but hate clutter, so the possibilities are enticing. You’ve started me thinking.

    Lauren,

Your idea for the coffee table has blown me away!! I think that is really inspired – if you try it, I’d love to hear how it turns out! The small one could also make a great nightstand! Thanks for letting us in on your ideas.

OMG Liz this is too funny – I just now am browsing through your archives because I have ten minutes to myself – my daughter is down for the night and my husband isn’t home from work yet.

I just bought TWO expedit bookcases at IKEA yesterday for the family room re-do! I have been working on the room all day whenever I get a chance. I’ll have to look at these examples more closely because I’m needing some inspiration. We need them to be child-friendly, and stylish. I’m liking them filled with books on one side, and baskets of toys on the other. My husband wants me to style them more – with our knick knacks from around the house. It’s a conundrum.

Can’t believe how in sync our styles are! Love this blog!

    Christy,

I love it!! Excellent choice on the bookcases – I can’t wait to see what you do with them! Seriously, the possibilities are endless – I don’t think you can go wrong, and I know you’ll come up with something amazing. Keep us posted!

We have the expedit second down on the left, only ours is in the dark brown. Our bedroom is fairly long so we have quite a bit of open space that we don’t really know what to do with, so we turned it on its side and have it about 3′ from the end of our bed and use it as a room divider. I had been looking for a two sided bookcase and this works perfectly! Plus we have our second tv in our bedroom (shame, shame I know) and it’s a great height to see it from our bed with it on top of the bookcase.

We have one! After a wedding in Minneapolis this past fall we made a quick stop at IKEA (I could have spent all day there) and picked up our own Expedit book shelf. My husband DJs (real DJ, with turntables and all) for a hobby and needed a place to keep his MANY records. This bookshelf is the perfect space!
