Homebody Queries: One Bowl Or Two?

2009 March 25

You have to promise not to judge my husband if I agree to tell you his favorite thing about our house – promise??  Ok, here goes.

It’s our kitchen sink.  No fair, you said you wouldn’t judge!!!

Ok, now that you’ve recovered let me explain a little.  The bottom line is that our kitchen sink is actually pretty awesome.  It’s huge.  It’s deep.  I can fit the dishes from an entire dinner in that sucker all at the same time.  Let’s take a look at our schmancy sink:

 Kitchen sink

Ain’t she a beaut??  You may be surprised that we went for a single bowl sink instead of one of the double-bowl sinks that seem to be so common these days.  Well, we had a double-bowl sink in our townhouse but it turned out that the allure of the double bowl was completely lost on us – were we supposed to be soaking dishes?  Do other people have smaller pots that actually fit in those sinks?  Aren’t other people annoyed that there’s only a disposal on one side??  These were the questions that we asked ourselves, and it turns out that a single bowl just fits our lifestyle better.  It’s so huge (29 inches long, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep to be exact) that we can actually have dirty dishes on one side while we rinse dishes on the other, all without that pesky bowl-divider getting in the way – delightful, I tell you.

kitchen sink with dishes

Those are full-sized dinner plates!!  And the fact that it’s an undermount is priceless.  Cleanup is a breeze with this sink – just swipe all those crumbs into the sink, and you don’t even have to worry about the edge of the sink getting grimy.  The final irresistible feature of our sink is that it’s stainless, a fact that I was quick to appreciate while I was using the white, porcelain kitchen sink at my parents’ house when they were so kind as to let us stay there while our house was being remodeled (thanks Mom & Dad!!!).  No offense to their lovely triple-bowl sink, but it had to constantly be cleaned because practically anything left marks on the porcelain and the triple-bowl feature was a bit of a pain because the smallest bowl was the one with the disposal in it – where’s the logic in that?

Now that you’ve heard about my husband’s odd love for our sink (ok, I love it too), what feature of your kitchen are you strangely proud of?  What’s your stance on the number of bowls that a sink should have – are you a one-bowler like us, a two-bowler or one of those rare triple-bowlers?

Ah, the sting of an ungrateful child!

However, I totally agree with your sink assessment. When we finally make the move to a smaller home, our choice will be your deep undermount sink with only one bowl. Also, we can bathe our mini-dachshunds in the sink!
Lizzie, you make great choices in both the sink and husband categories.

    Mom,

I know, I am totally heartless. :) However, I do have to give your sink kudos for making it through 20+ years of abuse and still looking pretty darn awesome. And thanks – I’m a big fan of the sink, too (and the husband!!).

P.S. I like that your name shows up as “#1 mom” – so true!!

Sounds like your parents’ sink is a lot like my parents’ — I will never understand why anyone in the 80s wanted three bowls, with the smallest having the disposal!

That said, I am completely envious of your sink. I have a double bowl in our patio home and we NEVER use the non-disposal side. So pointless.

I’m a one bowler, envious of your undermount sink. Sigh.
My favorite appliance has to be our fridge – side by side, with a water and CRUSHED ICE dispenser. I LOVE crushed ice. It makes me feel like a kid. When I’m dieting and thus not drinking as much vino as I want, I pour some diet pepsi (okay – not the healthiest thing in the world, but I love it) in a glass over crushed ice and I don’t miss the wine, as much. But my favorite things in our kitchen are our collection of photos my husband has taken on our various trips, and our Welsh Spoons. :) Great article – loved it, as usual.

Oh Liz that is so funny – I should have read the previous comments before writing mine. Upon first glance I thought that your mom’s nickname WAS #1Mom and I thought to myself, oh how cute! haha!

I’m with your hubby (and you) on this one – I love your sink! I can’t believe how big it is! What a great addition to your reno!

My favorite thing in our current kitchen (in a rented loft) is our granite topped island. It has two electrical outlets, so we can cook and food process our hearts out on it :-)

My favorite appliance (?) is our hot water dispenser by the sink. Wretched excess by I love it. I love reading your comments and then what others say about it.

    Leslie,

Ahhh, so jealous of your hot water dispenser!! We seriously debated getting one while we were redoing our kitchen. So convenient – hot chocolate at a moment’s notice!!

Hi! I came across your blog via this young house. Amazing job on your house!! My husband and I bought a house about a year and a half ago and we immediately redid our kitchen. We love our sink and it’s technically a two bowl, but it’s a cast iron sink from Kohler that has a “smart divide” so the middle divider is about half the height of a normal one. I love it! We still get the two sides for wash and rinse, but pan handles and cookie sheets fit so well in it!
the link below is for the one we have, only ours is an undermount, so it doesn’thave the faucet attached.

    Alli,

I’m so glad you stopped by!! I love the idea of a two bowl that can function as if it’s either a one or two bowl – thanks for letting us in our your awesome find!
