Totally Floored

You may remember that I’m in the market for a new rug in our den.  I’ve searched high and low for the perfect rug for this room, but no luck.

So the wheels started turning when I stumbled across this post yesterday – what if the answer to my flooring woes is . . . carpet tiles??

I know, I know – but just take a look at these things!

Not too shabby, right?  Here’s what I see as the pros and cons of these little guys:

Pros:

  • Any spots can literally be washed away in the sink.
  • Carpet tiles that have gotten too funky can be thrown away and replaced.
  • You can create just about any look or style of rug that you can imagine – and any size.  Perfect for those odd-sized areas.
  • They’re a green product.  Most are made of a percentage of recycled materials, and most tiles are 100% recyclable.

Cons:

  • Ranging from $1.86 sq/ft  to $9.66 sq/ft ($4.99 – $25.99 per 19.7″ tile), a rug made out of these tiles can get pricey really quickly.
  • I’m a little worried about these suckers staying in place, even though they come with little sticky dots that are designed to keep the tiles in the right spot.
  • Are carpet tiles uncool?  I’m not sure.

What do you guys think?  Yay or nay?  Or on the fence?  Has anybody tried them?

I have had my eye on these for a while. They seem like they would be the perfect solution to certain areas. I love the stripes. I don’t know of anyone that has them. But I also have concerns about them staying in place. But maybe with a carpet pad underneather they wouldn’t slip…

  2. FLOR will recycle the tiles for you. Just give them a call and they will send a box and shipping labels and recycle the tile into a new one!! Yay.

    Lindsay,

Wow, it’s great to know that Flor is taking even more steps to make these carpet tiles eco-friendly. Thanks for passing on that info!

I still haven’t formed an opinion about these yet. They sound good and look good, but I’m still just not sure.

I actually saw this done on Rate My Space and the result was a stunner. It was very similar to the 2nd one and the one in the kitchen with the beautiful stripes. That was when I’m convinced to look into these babies as possibility for our home.

These tiles are very cool… It’s hard to get over the “tile” aspect of them, but once you do they look great!

  7. Tonya says:

I absolutely love some of the designs in the pictures, and I love that you can use the different designs to make your own personalized rug. I say carpet tiles are cool – go for it!

  8. Averill says:

I think they make sense in high traffic areas or when you need a more customized size. A lot of them are really cute, too! I’ve never tried them personally though so I’m not sure if they stay put (that’s always been my biggest concern, too).

I love these FLOR tiles! I also saw them on Rate My Space recently and the homeowner also had some concerns about them slipping and sliding but the inspiration homeowner said that they absolutely don’t move at all — even though she didn’t use the sticky dots as she was worried about the glue on her floor.

I think they would be perfect for your space.

  10. Not to go off subject but I love your coffee table. Where did you get it?

  11. Denise says:

I have the FLOR tiles in my home and love them! I have the “Between the Lines” pattern and have them placed in an alternating grid pattern. We have them in our great room and adjoining kitchen. They absolutely do not slip. We just use the dots. After one year of use, they’ve held up great to our wild 6 year old son and 80lb. rottweiler!

I have been eyeing the FLOR catalog for years now. I think I am finally going to dive in and do one of the tile rugs for my daughter’s room. I think it will make a great surface for her to play on, and I love that you can just wash them in the sink. Anything to make life easier! The one I am looking at is pretty reasonable, compared to what you would normally pay for a 5 x 8 rug–I think it is around $140. I think I will see how it goes without a rug pad, you can always add one underneath later.

    Hey all,

I am so glad to hear that I’m not the only one with Flor-love, and I’m even happier to hear that some of you have them and love them!! Maybe I’ll have to take the plunge . . .

    Jess,

Yay, I’m glad you like our coffee table! I have a thing for square coffee tables, and this one has been good to us. It’s from Macy’s and is part of the Wilton Table Collection – I would give you a link but links aren’t working in my comments for some reason. :( It’s regular price is high, but we waited for a super sale and got it about 2 years ago for a great deal – maybe it will go on sale again? Hope this helps!

  14. I’ve always loved the look of the carpet tiles. I think they are great for making a rug unique to what you want in the look and color combo.

I really really like these! I have heard of them before but never looked at the website until I read your post. Yes, they are a wee bit pricey but depending on the style and size but I’m going to look on ebay… I would be willing to buy one of the large FLOR rugs, NEW off ebay!

    Good Luck! Keep us posted!

    Hi Liz.
I have those Souk Chic tiles and they totally make a room. I also have a 140 pound Newfoundland who came as a tiny puppy and made pulling up and washing a tile necessary more than once! ;)
I split the cost out over a few months of budget by purchasing them in blocks of 6 at a time… I don’t usually like to spend a lot of money on things – but my carpet tiles are well worth it.
Lastly – you are right – the sticking together aspect is a little less than desirable IF you have to pull them up often to wash or if you are dealing with pet hair… but i haven’t been to upset about having to apply to new stickers!
    Love,

I have flor tiles in my entry that I love! I kept an eye on the website in the lower price section and I got 3 tiles for the center of the rug and then five tiles I cut in half to use as a border around the center ones. I love them as an entry rug. I’m not sure I’d use them as a full rug under a sofa since, at least the ones I have, are the cut pile and not very plush. There are others that are more plush, but the price is higher. The stickers keep all the tiles together and basically the weight of the tiles keep them in place.

    • Liz says:

      Alli,

How cool to know that the Flor tiles can be cut! I hadn’t even thought of it, and I love the versatility that you could get from cutting the tiles. What a great idea! Thanks for filling us in.

Hi Liz – We have these in Fiona’s room – the Toy Poodle ones in pink, white and orange. And yep, you can cut them if necessary, to create a border. They’re super easy to clean, soft underfoot, and they don’t slip at all. Dublin likes to nap in there – pretty solid endorsement, if you ask me.

If Matt would just agree, that blue multi-patterned one would be in our living room, but he doesn’t love it, so I’ll just have to drool over it on your site.

  19. Audrey says:

I have a ton of carpet tile rugs in my home! I’m a commercial interior designer, so I use leftover (free) samples for my rugs, but I would recommend purchasing one if they won’t break the bank. I duct tape the seams (underneath) and then pop an Ikea rug pad underneath – works like a charm. :)

  20. Liz says:

    Audrey,

I love the duct tape tip!! Thanks for filling us in! :)
