I’ve always been partial to both – ranch makes just about anything taste better (try it, you’ll see), and what’s not to love about arts & crafts time – best part of elementary school, if you ask me.
Oh, we’re talking about houses? My bad.
But that brings me to my question – what style of house do you secretly (or openly) lust after? Does it match up with the style of house that you actually live in?
In my case, I’ve always been in love with Tudors and Arts & Crafts-style homes – love them beyond all reason. I grew up in a Tudor-style house, and there are tons of beautiful little neighborhood filled with Tudors sprinkled around Dallas. I always thought that I would live in one, but the hubster and I nixed Tudor after Tudor while we were on our house search – they were gorgeous and unique and exactly what we wanted visually, but we couldn’t get past the awkward layouts leftover from another era. As for the Arts & Crafts homes, there are a few around Dallas, although they’re mostly new builds because they aren’t native to our area – and they’re pricey, to say the least. Ah well, a girl can dream!
So we bought our little ranch house. And you know what? Turns out I never really knew what I wanted until we lived in this house – maybe it doesn’t have the gorgeous exterior of a Tudor or period details, but this little sucker delivers – a perfect layout, tons of space, and turns out it was fully customizable. What’s not to love??
And maybe I was never really destined for those other houses. Here are the results of a quiz I just took:
I guess our little ranch house was meant to be after all! (Although I’m not sure I like being described as “simple” . . . I guess I’ll let that one go. Where are my sweatpants??)

What a terrific quiz! Apparently I am a “Refined Victorian” currently living in a ranch! I do agree that ranch has some of the best floorplans available, especially for remodeling.
Well, turns out I am a Ranch lover too :-) Who knew?! Great quiz!
Spanish Colonial here! I’d say the quiz is spot on!
I love arts and crafts homes – but there aren’t any in my area, that I know of anyway. We live in a split level that is VERY similar to the house I grew up in, so I totally love it! One day I’d love to fix up an arts and crafts…no, I’m lying. One day I’d love to move into ALREADY fixed up arts and crafts house. Ah, that would be heaven. With a water view, please. A girl can dream, right?
What a fun quiz. I’m a lively Spanish Colonial! And funnily enough, the description is pretty much spot on! Love it!
Like a Spanish Colonial home, you are warm with an eye toward the romance of living. While you are traditional and can be a little introverted, you are also enlivened with impulsive flairs of color that amuse and energize your friends and family. Spanish Colonial homes take a simple construction style and add artistic details like painted tiles, iron fixtures, and huge carved doors denoting, like you, a love of art and individuality. Your combination of down-to-earth fun and elegance puts everyone at ease.
The quiz says I’m refined Victorian, but I beg to differ. I am obsessed with Tudor style homes!
Another ranch lover here (per quiz results). I agree with Cheyenne – tudors are the best! I have run into difficultly finding a perfect tudor layout though. Many of the tudors in my area have attic conversions that, while large in size, aren’t very functional.
Fun! I was Greek Revival…kind of surprising…not really what I thought!
I’m a ranch.
I’m a ranch! Hmmm…to be honest, I think I’m a bit more type A than that (I freak out when something gets on my white sofa after all). Ah well, maybe this is the default for us Texan lawyers? ;)
That said, I love Arts & Crafts bungalows….I live in an area of Houston dominated by them and, while I live in a new build, absolutely adore their cozy look. In our next house, we’re trying to rip off some good old Craftsmen style with our front porch and dark chocolate trim.
Apparantly I’m a highbrow Greek Revival. Not exactly sure what that means!
