Riding The Subway (Tile)

As you may have realized by now, I have an obsession with white kitchens.  Surely I’m not alone on this one – they’re fresh, clean, classic . . . I could go on forever.

Due to my obsession, I knew that our remodeled kitchen was going to have gorgeous white cabinets.  This posed a bit of a dilemma – you see, I also have an obsession with white subway tile.

What do to?  Would the white cabinets and white backsplash be too much?  When we were planning our kitchen, I scoured the web for pictures of this combination and found some winners:

White Kitchen

Definitely not too much – the kitchens in those designer photos look dynamite.  But what about in our kitchen – the kitchen that looks right into our den with all of that awesome white paneling?  Would white cabinets, white subway tile, and white paneling look crazy?

In the end, we decided that it might look crazy.  Maybe it wouldn’t have – if we ever move, maybe we’ll pull the trigger on our next kitchen.  But for this kitchen, we decided to go for the best of both worlds – we chose a beautiful glass tile that combined the lovely clean lines of subway tile with a gorgeous, mossy green finish.

And do you know what?  I don’t miss that white subway tile for a minute.

I love subway tile too. I really like the unique green tile in your kitchen. I have white in mine with black countertops. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.

I always think the white subway tiles + white cabinets will be too much white… and then I see a kitchen with that combination and it looks fabulous! Your glass tile backsplash is beautiful! It’s hard to go wrong with them!

Me neither. (miss the white tile in your kitchen, I mean.) Even though I do love white tile, I think your glass tiles reign supreme! I love your kitchen and just hope that I can someday visit Texas and pop by to say and have a tall cool beverage at that gorgeous island of yours!

I really love your glass subway tile, but then again, I’m a big fan of bringing in some color! I have to admit though, those white-on-white kitchens in your inspiration photos look pretty amazing, too.

Glass tile is the king! Subway tiles are great, but you cannot go wrong with adding some color with glass tiles. Beautiful backsplash application!

I just love the cabinets and also the glass tiles – they look fabulous.

We are in the midst of planning a remodel of our kitchen and have chosen white cabinets & my husband didn’t want stainless steel appliances, but chose white instead. He wants white subway tiles and I’m hesitate to do white/white & white – I would like to put 2 rows of glass tiles in sea glass shades – since he wants to lean towards a coastal look – but he said all white would be easier for resale. What do you think?

      Jennifer,

How fun to be remodeling your kitchen!! And I love the glass tile you found, and for such a great price!!

Both you and your husband have a point regarding the backsplash – there is a potential that an all white kitchen could be a bit cold and void of personality, yet homes that remain “neutral” tend to fare better when on the market. However, the backsplash is a relatively small area so it’s unlikely to be a point that “makes or breaks” the deal. If you plan on staying in your home for at least another 2 years, I say go for the glass tile backsplash – it’s fun, it’s current, and it will add a pop of color to your kitchen. But if you’re only remodeling the kitchen for resale, the all white kitchen may be your best bet (as long as you bring some color into the kitchen through linens or minimal accessories). I hope this helps!

  7. Thanks for taking any time to talk about white tile kitchen, advantages to white kitchens are endless. You can always repaint a wall, change a cabinet color, or add different colors to your space through frames, decorations, and cookware, while still keeping the classic aged look of white.
