Homebody Query: Who Rules The Roost?

2009 September 4

As you know, in addition to my hubby and me two little furballs also share our household.  They’re pretty convinced that they run the place, and make themselves at home wherever they please:

We got our furry friends right after we married, and we got right to work laying down the law and trying to teach them what they could and could not do.  Like sleep in our bed.  We should have known better.

Oh goodness, that one did not go over well.  At that time, we were living in the townhouse and we tried everything to keep them downstairs and out of our room, from closed doors to baby gates.  Let me tell you, baby gates have nothing on a determined cat.  They will take a flying leap and knock those suckers down.  And while they do it, they will meow like they’re being tortured and then they’ll paw at your door for hours, still meowing, until you finally give in and let them in.  Then they will jump on the bed and proceed to walk on you, sniff you, and try to sleep on your head as punishment for trying to keep them out of your room in the first place.

As I said, it did not go well.

Fast forward two years, and we’ve finally been trained.  The kitties sleep with us every night, and they each have their assigned spots.  Every night, Lexie jumps on our headboard and makes her way behind the curtains to sleep on the window sill behind our bed, as happy as a clam for eight hours in her little bedroom:

Riley, on the other hand, insists on sleeping down by our feet . . . for the most part.  He’s still a little needy and will occasionally venture near us for a little reassuring snuggle.  Or to try to sleep on our heads.  Oh well, baby steps, right?

Even though they drive me bananas sometimes, I’m a total sucker for their furry faces and they make our little family complete.  So that brings me to my question – do the pets rule the roost in your house?  And tell me we’re not alone in letting the little buggers sleep with us . . .

    Nicole,

Isn’t it fun!! It’s Pottery Barn from about 8 months ago – they don’t carry it anymore, but they do still have the fabric! “http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p11318/index.cfm?pkey=call%2Dwindow%2Dcoverings”

Our furbabies definitely rule the house – 2 cats and 2 dogs. The kitties sleep with us but the doggies do not.

    Kathy,

Our little furballs are a breed known as ragdolls – they’re floppy and super docile and totally indoor kitties!!

You know my dogs rule my house!! I didn’t stand a chance with a husband who had an 80 pound lab sleeping in his bed long before I came along :)

I love that picture of the cats in the bathroom!

Ours have all been strays and weren’t raised right. But they never slept in our bed either. Our big cat “Faro” has a thyroid condition and sleeps where he can see his food bowl.

    I love your little kitties,
we have two kitties, and they share the same bed we do. I keep telling my husband we need to get a king size bed just so we can all have more room, but chances are they will still sleep butt up against us no matter how big our bed is. My one kitty half-pint will sleep right between my husbands legs all night, and not move till the alarm goes off. Only when my husband gets out of bed do our cats get up. our kitties are super spoiled and I wouldn’t have it any other way, they rule our house and love us in return.
will have to check your blog for more kittie posts.

Found your blog through http://www.centsationalgirl.com. My husband and I have two cats, Big Kitty and Little Kitty who completely rule our house (our lives, really). haha. I would kill to have them sleep with us like yours do but what usually happens is when I’m off to work early in the morning, they both jump up and sleep next to my husband while I’m gone. Sad story! :) Anyway, it’s great to find fellow cat lovers. I’ll definitely be back to your site. P.S. Your kitties are adorable! Love the long hair!!

Oh totally! She is a 16 lb daschund named Maggie, and it is her bed not ours! When we recently redid the stairs from carpet to laminate I was afraid she would take a header since she couldn’t get any traction. So I found braided stair treads just for her! Spoiled rotten! But we love her!

Our two cats do NOT sleep with us, primarily because of my allergies; however, that doesn’t stop Subi from crying outside our door each night…I think she’s still longing for Dave’s bachelor days when she got to sleep on his head. ;)

All that said though, our dog Olivia sleeps with us…so I guess we’re pretty weak, too. Hope you had a great weekend, Liz!

Our two cats definitely do! We have Lucy and Linus, Lucy is a tortoiseshell with a definite “tortitude” quite the sassy little thing and Linus is a skittish tuxedo cat. Lusy I’d say is the main controller in our house. We love having Linus sleep in our room because he stays at the bottom of my feet and doesn’t get up until we do usually. However, Lucy is a consistent 4-5 am alarm clock, so we usually end up kicking both of them out around that time. She also has pulled down the fabric covering the bottom of the box xpring on our bed and climbs in to her little nest which is so frustrating because we can then feel her walking around among the springs! We’ve stapled it up once already, but she just worked at it and pulled it back open again. I’d definitely say she’s the queen of the household!
