Oomph, There It Is

It pains me to pay a lot for something when I’m pretty sure I can achieve a similar look for pennies on the dollar.

Like when I spied this gorgeous coffee table from Oomph the other day:

Lacquer-y goodness?  Yes!  Almost $2,000?  Heck no!

While I was busy getting over the sticker shock I started thinking about our coffee table.  We got it at Macy’s right after we got married {we had lots of store credit, as most newlyweds do} and in the 3 years that we’ve had it the coffee table has gotten a few nicks and scars, and we now have a brown rug.  So it’s a lot of brown going on in there.

Anyhoo, the point is that the pricey Oomph coffee table reminded me a lot of our much-cheaper-plus-we-already-own-it coffee table from Macy’s:

{ I de-styled it so you could see our coffee table in all its glory. }

Can you see the similarity, too?  Okay, maybe it doesn’t have all of the cool angular patterns that the pricey coffee table has, but I think that the square shape and narrow wood slats give off a similar vibe.

So here’s where I’d love your input – would you go ahead and paint our coffee table?  And if so, what color would you paint it? {Here’s a reminder of the color scheme that we have going on in our den.}

    Heck yeah I’d paint it! I LOVE the turquoise. Or even orange – to match your throw blanket. Or white, then it would work with other accessories, should you choose to change them out. I think this is a fabulous project and I hope you do it!

    Since you mentioned it, yeah, your coffee table is the wrong colour :)

    I have difficulty from your shots getting a real good feel for the room and whether turquoise would fly. You’ll have to be the judge of that-turquoise is my favourite designer colour!

    White would be better than the brown but turquoise might be awesome!

  4. Lynn says:

    Definitely paint it! I think white would really pull the room together (since the walls are white), but I think either turquoise or orange would look great too.

  5. Paint it! I think it would look superb painted.

    And way, wayyyy cheaper. :)

    Yes! I’d paint it for sure… maybe that indigo-type color that it in your throw?

  7. Katrina says:

    I’d likely paint it solid white, because – if you change up your colors in your den – it will easily go with everything. I’d likely paint another small piece of furniture turquoise instead….

    Hmmm…white seems obvious {and so does turquoise and orange}, but I am kinda digging a deep gray or yellow.

    I would definitely paint it! I’d go for turquoise because I’m bold like that. But I also think white would look really sharp and nice.

  10. PAINT IT LIZ! I’d love to see it a creamy, cafe au late color which would pick up on the rug and your furniture, bring out the architecture of the piece, but still work seamlessly into future rooms. If you want to go bolder, what about orange?

  11. Paint it!! :) I vote for white or turquoise. I change things around so much in our living room, white would allow for any changes you implement, but turquoise would look pretty rockin’. I think orange would look a little funky against the brown rug.

    I’d go with that indigo color too…. it would make it stand out, and is slightly neutral, but less obvious than white. love the piece. have fun!

    YES!

    Indigo or turquoise, depending on how bright and “out there” you want to go. Go for it!

  14. At first I thought black to play off your frames, but that might be too dark. Now I’m thinking your rug is so fab, you should go with the color in the pattern, is it cream ? Then the rug would really be seen through your table.

    Then I’d put something decorative in turquoise on top to coordinate with your accessories.

  15. Paint it a high gloss white! It’ll really liven up the room :)

  16. I would totally paint it. And I personally think that the bright orange would be an awesome choice.

    My first instinct was to say orange, but I don’t think that would go well with the (gorgeous) rug you have in there. High gloss white would be a nice, still conservative, pop but I say go turquoise. If you don’t like it… sand and paint again!

    I would go for the turquoise from the pillow and the tiffany lamp! Go bold or go home!

    Can’t wait to see what you choose.
