Plans For The Nursery

I know I promised you guys a design board but my Photoshop skills were not up to the challenge today – so instead I’ll just give you a tour of what I (currently) have planned!

The baby’s room will be the bedroom that is closest to our room – about 7 steps door to door.  Until Sunday, it looked like this:

Plans For The Nursery

Mmm, lovely.

After we cleared out the room (I’m thinking about possibly a garage sale?) it looked like this:

(By the way, I love the crib in person – so pretty! And it came with the toddler rail that you can see in the corner, score!)

Much better!!  And now the curtains are gone, so you can mentally erase those.  :)

Here’s the general layout that I have planned (ignore the colors in the floor plan):

And to shed some light on what you’re looking at . .  .

  • the door to the hallway is on the bottom right, the door to the jack ‘n jill bathroom is on the right-hand wall, the window is on the wall across from the hallway door, and the closet is on the left-hand wall
  • the crib will be directly across from the door and under the window (we will have cordless blinds so don’t fret)
  • the dresser / changing table is on the right-hand wall
  • the glider and ottoman are in the bottom left-hand corner
  • a low bookcase is on the left-hand wall

But now onto the fun stuff!!  I’m in love with chevrons and somehow they are nowhere to be found in my entire house – but no more.  Check out this fabric, which will be floor to ceiling curtains on either side of the window / crib:

Plans For The Nursery

LOVE!  I’ve received a fabric sample and the pink is a lovely coral-y pink that will look fab.

I’m thinking of having a plain or very simple fitted crib sheet with a crib skirt similar to this one with the pompom fringe in solid colors – either pink with orange pompoms or vice versa.

Plans For The Nursery

I’m going to use my childhood dresser (that you saw in a photo at the beginning of this post) as the changing table, and I’ve been wanting to paint it a fun tangerine shade like this:

My dresser also has raised detailing but I’m not sure whether I’ll highlight it.  And I’m debating between snazzy pink knobs from Anthropologie, ring pulls or an array of mismatched knobs.

I would love to do a setup similar to this for the wall above the changing table:

And remember that animal print fabric I showed you last week?

Plans For The Nursery

It’s going to make several appearances around the room – maybe some pillows, as a background in artwork, and in these fun little baskets that I couldn’t resist buying last night:

Aren’t they so cute??  I’m thinking they’ll be good for organizing the top of the changing table.

As for a rug, I was originally wanting to go for a crazy pattern, or lots of color, but lately I’ve been thinking that a simple white or off-white shag rug might be just the ticket:

And now onto the glider.  I was adamantly opposed to the traditional looking glider and wanting something more modern and chic-looking . . . but in the end I fell in love with the comfort and practicality of this glider / recliner combo (in a slightly different, non-textured fabric!).  What pushed me over the edge into buying this one was the fact that the back was actually tall enough for me to lean my head against the back cushion – I’m apparently too tall for all the cute gliders and my head just dangled in the air instead of leaning against the cushion and that simply would not do.  And this baby reclines!!  Sold.  This glider may not win any awards for looks but I cannot wait to test it out with our little girl!

Plans For The Nursery

I’m a pouf-lover and I knew I wanted poufs somewhere in the room.  I originally thought of hanging them above the crib (exactly like the photo below) but I think that might look too busy/crazy with the curtains we’ll have going on, so now I’m thinking of hanging them in the corner above the glider.  I love the way these are clustered together and the varying shades of pink – I hope to be able to replicate the look pretty closely!

Plans For The Nursery

When I was a kid I had a ridiculous amount of stuff that I wanted to display – and while I know that an infant won’t really collect things and need oodles of display space I like the idea of having a bookcase for books (duh), stuffed animals, and whatever other random things might start to pile up.  This Ikea Expedit bookcase will go on its side next to the glider and will have a great surface for a lamp or book for those late nights that I know are in my future.

Plans For The Nursery

Ooh, and I recently saw these and thought it might be fun to paint a pair of them some fun color and attach them to the bottom of the bookcase – both for looks and functionality.

Plans For The Nursery

And last but not least, I saw this photo on Pinterest this morning and just about died.  The nursery itself is gorgeous but what really caught my eye was the animal artwork above the crib (which turns out to be Marimekko fabric!).  I had originally planned on making some artwork out of the animal fabric, but now I’m dying to paint an oversized graphic of the animals from the fabric on this giant scrap piece of plywood that I’ve had lying around, and then lean it (secured to the wall, of course) above the bookcase.  Wouldn’t that be awesome??  Here’s to hoping I can pull it off.

Plans For The Nursery

So that’s the plan for our baby girl’s nursery!!  I’ve gone through about a zillion design plans before getting to this one so who knows how many more times it will change before it’s finished – but that’s part of the fun, right?  :)

P.S.  I’m currently planning on keeping the walls tan, but I might wind up painting them a pale pink once I get everything else into place and get an idea of how it’s going to look – we’ll just have to see how it goes!

Love it! I don’t find out the sex of my baby for another 2 weeks, so I haven’t done any serious nursery planning yet – but it seems like we have similar taste! I love chevron, I want to incorporate pom pom trim (probably on the bed skirt), I pinned that same poufs-over-crib pic and I was thinking of a tangerine dresser! Can’t wait to see your progress so I can copy ;)

  2. This looks great! I think my favorite part might be the oversized art you plan on painting. So much fun!

Oh, I can totally see it! It is going to be so cute.

  4. Dang, I love that pink fabric and was eyeing it up when I was convinced we were having a girl! Oh well. I think the elements you are choosing are going to be beautiful!

I love the idea of the poufs over the glider. It’s always hard keeping babies awake while nursing in the glider — maybe the poufs would help!

    It’ll be gorgeous!!

COMPLETELY agree with you on needing a place to rest your head in a glider! Sometimes you just need to fall asleep sitting up with your litte one, whether it’s when they take too long nursing or are sick and need to sleep upright on your chest to breathe. Great, practical choice! Plus, you chose a neutral and will be hanging the poofs above which will totally take away from the chair. Can’t wait to see the finished project, especially your artwork.

I did a pink and orange nursery theme for my little girl, and I absolutely love it! Pink and orange is my favorite color combination, and just looks so fresh and sweet in a baby’s room. I even bought an Amy Buttler pink/orange/red bedding set for her to use as her room becomes a toddler’s room, to continue the theme. But I painted her walls a bright apricot color and used pinks tones as the accent; I love color. Anyways…love your blog and style; CONGRATS on your upcoming arrival! :)

  9. Rachel says:

I’m sorry…one more comment! :) I suggest the blinds or shades you use to be blackout, or line your currents so that they are light-blocking and can be pulled behind the crib. You will (most likely) find that your little one sleeps better and longer if the room is darker!

    • Liz - It's Great To Be Home says:

DEFINITELY!! It’s funny you should mention that because the lighting in that room has been something I’ve thought about a lot – it’s probably the brightest room the house AND we have a motion activated security light right outside of it that sometimes lights up the room at night. I’m just guessing, but that’s probably not ideal for getting baby to sleep. :) So I am definitely on the blackout bandwagon, and we’ve ordered some cordless, blackout, top-up/bottom-down shades that will hopefully be awesome. Fingers crossed!!

can’t wait to see it all finished!

  13. I love your plan – it’s going to be a room that you will love spending time in! So cute!

  14. Oh my what a fun nursery design! I love it! Those curtains are going to be the star of the show and a tangerine dresser…such a great color. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out! She’ll be one lucky girl.

I absolutely adore your plans! I have tried to comment here a couple of times, but a crying baby keeps pulling me in the other direction!

I think the tangerine dresser with sparkly knobs sounds fabulous! And while I love the IDEA of the mobile and artwork hanging above the changing table, I think you might find that impracticle a few short months after she’s born! In fact, we only used a changing table for Fi, then we threw it out/gave it away, and used a bed for Cal and now Beck. It’s just easier (more room to spread stuff out, and for multiple kids)!

I can’t wait to see what you end up with!!! Such exciting times Liz!!!

  16. I am super duper excited that you are working on this. I’m living vicariously through you and love all your choices (of course). I’m really digging the shape of your childhood dresser, and a pop of color will just be too fabulous for words. And the chevrons? LOVE! keep these updates coming.

  17. Wished I could make my daughter daughter’s room as beautiful as yours. I love your designs and fashion taste. I think I should start planning for my daughter’s nursery theme. :)

  18. Rachel says:

Poufs? WOW. I don’t think I’ve ever seen those before, but I love them. Unexpected fun. I’m a FAR way off from decorating (visual: hammeringourwayhome.com), but this totally just excited me for my own chance to do this (even if it’s months [&months] away)!

  19. Kerry says:

Love it. I am a fan of Chevron too and am surprised that I don’t have it anywhere in our house.I love the colors pink and orange together too. We are currently working on a nursery too for a baby boy (our third after having two girls). As much as I am a fan of pink, I am quickly learning to love blue too;)

  20. Jen Rames says:

Liz! This is going to be the coolest baby girl room ever. I love the curtain fabric! I can’t wait to see it in person :)

  21. Katrina says:

so many pretty ideas!!! The room is going to be lovely :)

  22. Absolutely Stunning! Love all the ideas! You are so creative.

  23. Your babies room is beautiful just want to suggest that you might want to think about not having the crib under the window. Why? First light can be an issue unless you have blackout curtains and also just safety something flying through the window just something to think ablout.

I’m embarrased to say that that very glider is still in my 5 yr olds room. I’ve been too sappy and sentimental to part with it. It won’t fit anywhere else in my house but you’ve given me the inspiration to at least update the cover a bit from the fuzzy pink one I put on it over 5 years ago.Happy Friday!

  25. Wow! Love it! The room is going to be gorgeous! Love all your ideas. This will be the coolest baby room ever.
