A Favorite Combination

After 4 years of living in this house, I think I’m finally beginning to figure out what color combinations make me happiest in my home.  This may sound like a small victory, but to me it’s a huge leap!  You see, I’ve made my fair share of decorating missteps over the years – not necessarily mistakes (although I’ve made those, too) but choices that just didn’t make me love a particular space.

When we first renovated our house I had to make decisions about paint colors for the entire house in just a few days.  My mom can attest that this was ridiculously stressful for me and resulted in a number of minor meltdowns.  Ridiculous, I know.  :)  Anyway, after testing a jillion paint swatches I had about half of our house painted a pale blue – the laundry room, two bathrooms, and a bedroom.

It is a beautiful color (the one at the top), but I’ve never been able to make it work in my home.  It just doesn’t sing to me, and any attempts I’ve made to work with that wall color have fallen flat.

However, there’s a room in our house that does work for me – our den.

I love it, and by analyzing what I like about the den I’ve been able to figure out why the pale blue paint isn’t working for me – it doesn’t fit into my favorite design combination!

Yesss, that’s the stuff!

I feel a little better about the pale blue I originally picked, though – it turns out that I just didn’t go bold enough!  Further down the same paint swatch are Brigade and Shimmering Sea, two shades that would have fit right into my favorite combination.  I actually painted our powder room a similar shade awhile back and I really love it.

I’m hoping that keeping this combination in mind can keep me from buying / painting random things in the future that just won’t work.  What about you – have you figured out what combination floats your boat, or are you still struggling to figure it out like I was until about 5 minutes ago?

yes it’s great when you know what you like, decision making becomes slightly easier and I’m with you, bring on the high contrast and mixed metals, yahoo!

  2. I love those color combos as well, and I hear you on struggling with colors that 1)work and 2) make you happy. Just looking at your images, it accomplishes both with me!

I am absolutely atrocious at picking out paint colors. I look at people who just seem to “get it” with awe. And I see so, so many beautiful colors that I just can’t seem to make work for me.
But when you figure out what works for you and accept it? Magic! I’m with you on the dramatic, contrasty accent colors and dark floors/light walls. I guess that means my walls are going to have to be neutral!

Picking the right paint color is so hard for me I love shades of greys and griege in our home – works so well with the natural ligh, and allows me to have fun with layering patterns and colors

I’ve done many paint jobs in my life and one thing in particular that I’ve always pointed out is that you want to consider what’s going to be in your room. I’ve seen people paint their room one color, only to realize that the color of the wall now doesn’t go with anything else in the room so the have to repaint it.

I like the paler blues! They are subtle for the laundry and bathrooms… And blue isn’t just blue- There are a million shades!

You’re so brave using the mixed metals and different textures!

Whilst not my particular taste, it is always good to find “your” style, and it has a nice serene look to it, well done!

  10. That looks just amazing! I love the contrast and colors!
