My Weekend Project

My weekend involved lots of this . . .

My Weekend Project

And our powder room now looks like this . . .

My Weekend Project

. . . instead of this!

My Weekend Project

Although the light blue walls were pretty I had gotten very tired of them – they felt kind of wimpy to me and I really wanted something more exciting!  This slate blue color is exactly what I wanted (although getting there wasn’t so pretty – more on that disaster tomorrow!).

My Weekend Project

This powder room is impossible to photograph since it’s tiny and the only light is from the sconces – so sorry for the somewhat crazy photos (for this photo above I dragged two lamps into the hallway so you could actually see the sconces).

But I absolutely love how the color turned out – to me it feels a little more dramatic, sophisticated, and much more interesting.  I ordered a print for above the toilet that I’ve been lusting after forever – I’ll post updated pics once it arrives!

And for you curious folks the paint color is Regatta Bay (550F-6) by Behr, and I used their Premium Plus Ultra Paint & Primer in One in the interior flat enamel.

It almost looks gray when it first goes on, but stick with it – once the whole room is painted it becomes a gorgeous slate blue.

Did you tackle any projects this weekend?

We Must Be Idiots

I don’t normally think of myself as a girl that can’t screw in a light bulb.  But apparently I am.

Here’s what happened – we moved into our house after we remodeled it and the pendant lights in our master bathroom were happily glowing with all their halogen goodness:

Fast forward a few months and all of a sudden our bathroom is dark and sad because of two burned out pendants:

Fast forward a few more months and our bathroom is still dark and sad . . . because we can’t figure out how to change the light bulbs.  Yes, you read that right.  The light bulbs thwarted us.

Every month or so we’d try again, twisting and pulling and doing anything we could think of to get the danged light bulbs out of their glass prisons.  And give us some more light.  But each time, they outsmarted us.

But not today, my friends – not today.  Today I declared victory over those pesky pendants and yanked – yes, yanked! – these little blown glass covers out of the pendants, revealing the light bulbs underneath, which I then yanked out.  I never would have thought yanking was the answer, but apparently it was.  Who knew?

Since we only had one extra bulb (I told you we were idiots), we now have 2 out of 3 pendants functioning properly.  Although I haven’t quite figured out yet how to get the blown glass covers back on the pendants . . . oh well.  Baby steps, right?

Sadly, I think that confession negates my MacGuyver moment from a few weeks ago.  Got any moments of less-than-brilliance to share that might make me feel better?

P.S.  Is anybody else having trouble accessing the blog?  (Of course if you are then you probably aren’t reading this right now.)  I’m hoping it’s just me . . .

Tutorial: Kitty Silhouettes

You might have noticed by now that we really like our cats.  A lot.  So of course I couldn’t resist immortalizing their little kitty silhouettes.

The contrast of the colorful lined paper against the black background gives these silhouettes a slightly modern spin on the traditional silhouette.

We hung them in the bathroom between the laundry room and my office, as this space has been designated the “cat room” – all their cat goodies are corralled in one place which makes me a very happy girl.

Did you spy the birdcage shower curtain?  I thought it was appropriate for our little kitties’ room.  :)

Anyhoo, here’s how you can make your own graphic silhouettes {cats or people, whatever floats your boat}.

1.  Assemble the supplies. You don’t need much for this project {and it’s super cheap!}:

~ printout of your subject, blown up to the size of your choice {I just printed out pics of the kitties in black & white from my computer}

~ frame of your choice {w/mat}  {I used a Ribba frame from Ikea}

~ feature paper in the color/design of your choice {I used a graphic, multicolored lined craft paper}

~ background paper in color of your choice {I wanted to do black but I didn’t have any black construction paper so I just printed out a black page on my computer.  That’s the lazy girl’s way.}

~ pencil

~ exacto knife

~ double-sided tape or spray adhesive or glue stick

~ self-healing mat (optional)

{ Yes, I actually used pictures of the same cat – I didn’t have a good shot of our fat kitty!  Shhh, don’t tell him… }

2.  Cut and trace and cut some more. First you’ll want to cut around your subject, using your exacto knife.

Then place your cut out on the back side of your feature paper and trace around the cut out.  Remember that the cut out should be facing the opposite direction of the way you want the final result to be.  {Also, be sure to make sure that any pattern is running the way you want it to.}

3.  Put it all together. Glue or tape your cut out in the center of the background paper, and then assemble everything together inside the frame.

Now they’re ready to hang!

{You might have noticed that I changed the position of the cat’s tail in the final cut out.  The best time to make such a change is when you’re tracing the cut out onto your feature paper.  Just draw and erase until everything looks right.}

Have you gotten hooked on the silhouette trend?  I think they’re awesome, and they definitely add a little more pizazz to the space – and who couldn’t use a little personalized art of their favorite pets?
