Welcome to the Pouf-A-Long!

Slide1

Y’all, I did it!!  I made a pouf!

Welcome to the Pouf-A-Long!

It’s far from perfect but I love it – and I can’t believe that it’s possible to make something like this by just following a simple pattern!

I followed the BHG tutorial pretty closely, and I thought that it was easy to follow for the most part.  I was surprised that actually sewing the pouf with the sewing machine was the easiest part!  The only steps that I thought were hard were stuffing the pouf (mine was lumpy no matter how hard I tried) and basting the octagon fabric pieces onto the top and bottom of the pour (I could definitely have benefited from one of those curved needles).

Welcome to the Pouf-A-Long!

I stuffed my pouf with 3 old throw pillows, 2 cut up towels, 2 pillow cases, a fitted sheet and some fiberfill that I already had.  The only supplies that I had to buy were the fabric, the upholstery thread and some StitchWitchery – so the whole shebang cost less than 30 buckeroos!  Not too shabby for a DIY pouf when poufs retail for over $100.  Yay!

Welcome to the Pouf-A-Long!

Did you decide to jump on the bandwagon with me, Kim and Meredith and sew up a snazzy pouf?  If so, we want to see it!

Here’s how to show us your pouf:
1. Include the Pouf-A-Long button above on your blog with a link to one of our pages.
2. Post about your own pouf on your blog. (You can also link up to a past post for your DIY pouf.)
3. Link up below! You can link up here or at Welcome to Heardmont or NewlyWoodwards. Include the permanent link to your post (not just your url) and your link will show up on all of our blogs.
4. Check out the other poufs and comment! Make some new friends and congratulate your peeps on their awesome poufs.

Thanks for playing along with us!  :)  (UPDATE:  I got word that there seems to be a problem with my Comments, so if you have trouble leaving one feel free to send me your comment in an email and I’ll post it for you.  Thanks!)

Join the Pouf-A-Long!

You’ve probably seen poufs all over blog land, tucked under console tables or acting as ottomans and floor cushions – and if you’re like me, you’ve lusted after them.

Take a look – what’s not to like?

I’ve been wanting to make my own pouf for awhile but I had no idea how to go about it, so I figured I would eventually just break down and buy one.  That’s why I was so excited when Meredith from Welcome to Heardmont tipped us off that Better Homes and Gardens had created an easy-to-follow tutorial for making your own DIY pouf!

Awesome, right?  I instantly knew I wanted to make one – and I probably would have procrastinated forever if my bloggy friends Meredith and Kim from NewlyWoodwards hadn’t had the awesome idea to hold a Pouf-A-Long link party!

So what’s better than one pouf?  A whole BUNCH of poufs!!  That’s the whole idea behind this Pouf-A-Long, that it’s a chance for us to all have fun making poufs (the BHG version or your own) and sharing them with each other.

On Wednesday, July 20th, we’ll all get together and have a link party so that we can see each others’ poufs!  It will be fun meeting new bloggers, actually completing a DIY project (such a novel concept for me!) and getting an awesome pouf out of the deal.  :)

Fun, right?!?

Here’s how you can get in on the Pouf-A-Long:

  1. Share the Pouf-A-Long button on your blog, Twitter or Facebook page and get your friends and readers involved! (Email me if you have trouble getting the button.)
  2. Pick out some fun fabric and start sewing your pouf!
  3. Finish your pouf by Wednesday, July 20th.
  4. Link up your post about your pouf on Wednesday, July 20th – you can link here at It’s Great to be Home or at NewlyWoodwards or at Welcome to Heardmont. Kim figured out how to get everything to merge together into one big blog hop, so you’ll see all of the poufs no matter where you link up.

Are you in?!?  I can’t wait!! Hmm, now I need to find some fabric . . .

March Blog Party: The Trend I’ve Been Wanting to Try in My Home Is…

I’ve been smitten with anything and everything chevron-patterned these days – and I’m dying to incorporate something with a sassy graphic pattern into my home!  (Apparently the chevron tile floors at the flip weren’t enough to satisfy my need for chevron.)

Some ambitious bloggers have DIY’ed some chevron in their homes, and I think their projects are totally inspiring.  Are you smitten, too?

I decided to try to add a chevron pattern to my breakfast room chairs (you can read about that ongoing saga here, here and here).  It turns out that the key word here is “try.”

It all started out well – I printed out several copies of a chevron pattern that I found on the web and taped them together to form a large stencil.

Then I taped the stencil to my slipcover and made sure everything was straight with my laser leveler.

Then I marked the peaks and valleys of each zig and zag (I made mine a bit wider, about 3 zigzags thick) with a fabric pen – I had made small holes in the stencil using my seam ripper at each peak and valley, and pen marks were going to be my guide when I went back with painters tape to tape out the pattern.

Here’s how my pen marks looked – can you see where I was going?  (And it’s true, you can tell by the wrinkles that I don’t iron.)

Everything went really well until I rounded the edge of the chair to move onto the front side of the chair – then things got super wonky.  It was impossible to keep the pattern level!

I’m sure someone out there has figured out how to make the chevron pattern go around a curve, but it turns out that person is not me.  So, what I’m saying is, this project was a big fail.  No chevron patterned chairs for me!  I’ll have to slip it in somewhere else in my house – maybe pillows?

But don’t worry – I came up with another idea and have finally conquered this chair conundrum.  Two of them are totally finished and, if I do say so myself, they are looking fabulous.  I can’t wait to show them to you!

Do you have a project that turned into an epic fail?  Or am I the only one?

And while we’re all sharing here, go ahead and join in on the blog party!  The topic is “The trend I’ve been wanting to try in my home is…” Here’s all you need to do to join the party:

(1) Just click on the button below that looks like this Add Your Link and then type in the permalink to your specific blog post (like www.itsgreattobehome.net/blog-party), instead of just your blog address. You may have to copy and paste your url using your keyboard instead of your mouse, or you can type it in.

(2) I’d love it if you’d include the blog party button (below) and a link back to this post somewhere in your post so that your readers can get in on the fun!
