Design Advice: Bobbe’s Beachy Basement

This latest design board comes from Bobbe, who was yearning for a casual place to hang out with her gaggle of grandkids.  She loved the plan that I came up with for her daughter’s living room and hired me to spiff up her basement!

Bobbe’s basement has a ton of great things going for it – four windows, a fab neutral base and oh yeah – it’s huge!

Bobbe asked for a classic look with a coastal vibe, without being hit over the head with a theme.  The basement needed room for games, arts and crafts, TV watching and lots of bonding with the grandkids.  Because this space will have lots of kiddos running around, the decor needed to be able to stand up to popsicles and legos while still looking great for the grownups.

Here’s the new basement!

Working with the basement’s sandy walls, crisp whites and sea blues will evoke that coastal feeling that Bobbe’s after, while chocolate-y brown woods will ground the space.

FLOORPLAN:

FURNITURE:  Bobbe already has a great neutral sectional, a coffee table and a ping pong table that’s going to be purchased.  Here’s a quick look at everything else that’s going to be added to the basement:

~ Kids’ Craft Area:  It’s important for the grandkids to have a place to draw and be creative.  This table is a great color and expands to seat even more people {and hold more art projects}.  Pair the table with four of these chairs for an eclectic, mix and match look.

~ Lounge Seating: It’s no secret that kids love to flop down on the floor.  Three of these bean bag chairs are perfect for dragging around the basement and flopping next to the ping pong table to watch a game, the art table or near the TV.

~ Bookcase:  Bobbe has to have a place to store all those games and art supplies, and this bookcase has plenty of cubbies to hold all the goodies.  Mix in a few baskets like these to corral smaller items.

~ Arm Chairs:  Two of these armchairs are the perfect size for snuggling up with a good book or watching a movie.  The slipcovers are washable and bleachable, so Bobbe won’t have to fret about spills and dirt.

~ End Tables:  Nestle one of these end tables between the arm chairs, and another at the end of the sectional.

~ Media StandThis media stand will fit perfectly between the two windows at the end of the room where the cable hookup is located.

~ Console Table:  The back of a sofa isn’t exactly the prettiest thing in the world, so this console table will serve double duty both disguising the back of the sectional and providing a little extra storage space.  Woven baskets underneath and a stack of books on top will look great.

RUGThis rug in an 8.5 x 11 size is absolutely perfect to anchor the seating area.  Place it under the sectional and coffee table to bring loads of interest to the space.  As an added bonus, this rug is an indoor/outdoor rug that is hoseable, scrubbable and bleachable so it can stand up to anything the kids dish out.

CURTAINS:   Bobbe is lucky to have such great windows in the basement!  Hang these breezy grommet-top curtains as close to the ceiling as possible for extra drama {and they could be layered with bamboo blinds for a little extra oomph}.  This black curtain rod will look great with Bobbe’s existing door hardware.  Buy two extra sets of curtains and this curtain wire to create a hidden storage area in the bump out by the arts and crafts area – it will be the perfect place to stash any bulky items.  FInally, if a crafty impulse strikes then Bobbe may want to gussy up the curtains a bit with a line of cobalt blue ribbon along the bottom of the curtains {hot glue or fabric glue will do the trick}.

LIGHTING:

~ Chandelier over Craft Area: This basement is well-lit because of all the great recessed lights, but wouldn’t it be fun to have a little chandelier over the craft area?  Simply use a kit like this to convert the nearest recessed light so that it can be used as a pendant, and then swag this gorgeous capiz light fixture over the craft table for a great focal point.

~ Table Lamps: Two of these stately ivory lamps add to the coastal vibe of the room – place one on the console table and the other on the end table by the sectional {add a few books on top of the end table to bring up the height of the lamp}.  Between the two armchairs, add this gorgeous tripod lamp on a wood base.  As with the curtains, feel free to snazz them up with a little cobalt ribbon trimmed around the bottom of the lampshade.

WALL DECOR:

~ Starburst Mirror:  The space between the TV and the ceiling is begging for a little drama – this gorgeous starburst mirror is just the ticket.

~ Picture Ledge & Frames:  Hang this picture ledge just high enough above the sofa so that no one will hit their head.  Then layer family photos in brown frames like these in different sizes for a cozy, family-friendly look like this:

~ Leaning Mirror: The space between the two sconces across from the ping pong table would be perfect for this leaning mirror in white.

~ Painted Stripe & Kids’ Art:  On the opposite wall, paint a wide horizontal stripe in this color about 50 inches from the ground across the length of the wall – the stripe should be about two feet wide.

The stripe of blue will help bring the color throughout the room, and it will provide a great backdrop for a display of the grandkids’ artwork – and they will be thrilled to see their masterpieces hung on the wall.  Simply hang their framed art in frames like these in a straight line all along the painted stripe.

PILLOWS & THROWS:

~ Pillows:  The great big sectional and armchairs will be even cozy with oodles of pillows.  Start with three of these lumbar pillows, two of the solid ivory button-closure pillows, two of the blue striped pillows, one of the blue sweater pillows for extra coziness, and one of the blue floral pillows for a layered and inviting look.

~ ThrowThis throw {or a good substitute} will bring a few more splashes of color to the space which will allow Bobbe to add in accessories in greens, yellows and reds that don’t fit exactly into the tight blue and white color palette.  Drape it over the sectional or over the arm of one of the arm chairs.

So that’s Bobbe’s beachy basement!  It was a blast to work on, and I hope it’s a great place for Bobbe and her family to hang out.

Design Advice: Giving A Living Room New Life

Hey there, peeps!  Did you have a great weekend?  I just got back from Colorado where my sister got married over the weekend – it was a little hard to come back to a busy week after such a beautiful weekend!

Anyhoo, I need to get better about posting my design boards as they happen – this one has been waiting around for awhile, so here it is!

Here’s what Tiffani had to say about her living room:

{The room that I’ve chosen is} our living room – it’s huge and empty and I’m at a total loss as to what to do with it. We’ve only lived in this house for 2 months but my vision for this room is a casual, comfortable, inviting place for watching TV and hanging out after work, etc. but also a room that has enough seating that it could be used for entertaining purposes if needed as well.  I tend to like neutral and warmer colors.  I love tan, brown, navy/lighter blues, greens, golden hues (not too yellow), darker red, etc.  I also tend to like to see white used to decorate a room (although I’ve never used this to decorate as I am in no way an interior designer but I always seem to love the look when I see it in magazines, design websites, etc.)  I would have to say I lean toward the traditional design style (think Pottery Barn, Ballard Design, Restoration Hardware.)  If I could have a house straight out of PB I would be in heaven.

We are a newlywed couple and don’t have a ton of extra money lying around but I still want to bring this room together and make it a room we enjoy spending time in.  In the past I’ve felt like I’ve spent a lot of money “trying” to decorate a room but in the end it still never feels like a complete room.  I decided to enlist help in order to achieve that finished look without over spending. This is not our “forever house” (we will probably only live here 5-7 years) so I definitely want to keep that in mind when purchasing new furniture pieces.  We will also probably have kids in about two years so we don’t need top of the line, super expensive stuff (as much as I would love that I’m trying to be practical.) ~ Tiffani

Here’s how Tiffani’s living room looked when she wrote in:

Tiffani has an awesome living room with tons of great potential – with a vaulted ceiling, plantation shutters, gorgeous wood floors and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, what’s not to love?  With just a little tweaking, her living room will be the perfect place to cozy up in front of the TV or relax with friends.  Take a look at her new space!

This plan is traditional with a Pottery Barn feel, but amped up with fun accents like faux bois fabric and gleaming tin panels.  And while this color palette may be soothing with steely blues and cream, it’s anything but boring – pattern and texture throughout the room certainly keep things interesting.

~ Floorplan. With 3 doorways, windows on both ends and the large fireplace, the biggest challenge for Tiffani’s living room is the floorplan – but no worries, I’ve got it covered.  The seating area will be anchored by a large rug in the center of the room, and the sofa and two chairs should be placed as depicted in the floorplan below.

Even though the back of the sofa is facing an entrance to the room, it will not interrupt the flow of the room thanks to a long, thin console table placed against the back of the sofa.  Finally, a large media cabinet opposite the fireplace will balance the room and provide Tiffani with oodles of storage.

~ Rug. Tiffani’s favorite rug was the perfect jumping off point for this new living room, with tons of inviting colors from rust to sage to steely blue.  In a 9 x 12 size, this beautifully patterned rug will fit perfectly in her large living room.

~ Furniture. Since Tiffani recently purchased most of the main pieces in her living room, the majority of the furniture for this space will remain the same – but with a few fun additions.

Chair.  In addition to providing extra seating and balance to the room, this traditional armchair in an oatmeal color {on a huge sale!} will provide a lovely visual contrast against the deep chocolate sofa and chair that are already in the living room.

Media Cabinet.  This grown up living room deserves a grown up media cabinet, and this beauty {no longer available – here’s a good substitute} more than fits the bill.  Its deep wood tone will work beautifully with the existing furniture and become the focal point of that long and previously bare wall.

Console Table.  Since the console table will be draped in a few yards of this fabulous cream faux bois fabric to break up the deep brown of the furniture, it doesn’t make sense to purchase an expensive console table.  Instead, Tiffani could use two old bookcases and a long board {or something similar} to create a makeshift console table – no one will know the difference!  A stack of books and some beautiful vases on the console table will be a wonderful greeting as guests enter the room.

~ Curtains. The color of these beautiful steel blue curtains was plucked straight from Tiffani’s gorgeous new rug.  They will look best hung high and wide to showcase her beautiful plantation shutters.

~ Accessories.

Fireplace Revamp.  I’m pretty excited about the makeover that Tiffani’s fireplace will receive.  The inset above the mantle is just begging for something dramatic – installing these gleaming tin panels inside the entire inset will have a dramatic impact on the appearance of the fireplace {and for a great price!!}.  I would also love to see the mantle and the beam on the vaulted ceiling painted a rich, chocolate brown for a little extra swankiness and contrast – and I think she’ll love how the darker beam accentuates the height of the ceiling {kind of like in our den}.

Pillows.  Pillows in blue and neutral stripes will tie all of the colors in the room together and add a little interest to the sofa and chairs.

Shutters.  The long wall next to the media cabinet is the perfect place to lean a pair of these crisp, white shutters, which are a fun play off the plantation shutters in the room {and are a steal when compared to this Pottery Barn version!}

Wall Sconces.  Pairs of these simple but elegant sconces {on clearance!} flanking each window will add a little ambient lighting and tons of visual interest to each end of the room.

Floor Lamp.  Because of the locations of the electrical outlets in Tiffani’s room, it’s a little tough to add lamps without having cords snaking all over the floor.  However, this simple pharmacy lamp {which is no longer available – here’s a good substitute} placed near the chair by the fireplace is close enough to the wall that it won’t create a tripping hazard, and it will create a cozy nook for reading.

So there you have it!  One more living room whipped into shape.  What do you guys think?

Design Advice: A Family’s Room

While they’re super impressive, decorating a 2-story living room can drive you bonkers.  That’s what happened to one of my lovely clients who asked for some design advice when the frustration with her soaring ceilings became too much – as she said . . .

“We don’t like hanging out in our great room.  The TV is above the fireplace, so we have to crane our necks to see it, and it has open, vaulted ceilings, so it isn’t cozy or inviting.”

Say no more, let’s whip that living room into shape!  Here’s how the living room looked when my client wrote in:

Design Advice: A Family's Room

Design Advice: A Family's Room

By incorporating my client’s wish for fresh and simple design with a Pottery Barn feel, I whipped up this cozy yet elegant living room that will be perfect for both family game night and evenings with guests:

Living Room - Comfy Traditional

Crisp white is a gorgeous contrast against the soothing blues in this space, while natural elements add warmth and character.  Now let’s see how this new living room will all come together!

~ Floor plan. Nailing the floor plan can be the trickiest part of designing a room.  In my client’s living room, placing the sofa so that it faces the fireplace instantly gives her a ton of freedom in how she can arrange the room – and now she even has space to add a media center so that the TV is at a watchable level and her kids can manage changing DVDs on their own (a complaint with the previous arrangement).  And while I’ve chosen to place two armchairs flanking the fireplace, my client could just as easily slide the armchairs side by side opposite the media center (with their backs to the adjacent dining room) and add a bench in front of the fireplace for extra seating.  Tons of options!!

Design Advice: A Family's Room

~ Rug. This beautiful rug was the inspiration for the color palette in this room.  With steely blues and sage greens, it’s the perfect foundation for this new living room – and it’s soft enough that the little kids can still play on the floor as they please.

~ Accent Wall. In this two-story living room, I think it’s fab that my client chose to do an accent wall to provide a dramatic focal point to the space.  I know she are ready to say goodbye to that red, however, so we’re making it a bit more subtle with a gorgeous stormy blue (available at Home Depot).  (And if she has any leftover beige paint from when she painted the main walls, I would recommend painting over the white air vents on the wall above the media center, just to help them blend in a bit).

~ Furniture.

Media Center.  Oh happy day – my client already owned the perfect media center for this room!  (here and here)  I think she’ll love having the media center in this room, and it brings in extra storage to boot!  And filling the lower shelves with these woven baskets will make it easy to corral smaller toys in a jiffy.

Armchairs.  Since we’re keeping the existing sofa, mixing it up with two slipcovered armchairs instead of the matching leather love seat will both increase the visual interest in this room and give my client more flexible seating.  And with slipcovers, she can throw these babies in the laundry or switch them out whenever her heart desires.  The woven basket that is currently sitting next to the fireplace will act as a side table next to the armchair, the perfect place to place a drink or book.

Coffee TableThis coffee table is oh so fun, and will give this family tons of surface area to kick thier feet up, for display or for a child-sized dance floor.  And it doesn’t hurt that the woven circles are pretty to look at.

~ Curtains. These crisp white curtains will pop against the new accent wall and add a little extra drama.  I would love to see them hung high, at the top of the curved windows – just one on the left side of the room and one on the right (hanging a panel on both sides of each window would make things feel a little cluttered against the fireplace).   And while these panels are almost 10 feet long, I would buy an extra panel in case a little extra length is needed.

~ Lighting. When positioned next to the armchair, this swing-arm lamp will provide the perfect light for cozying up with a good book.  Across the room on the console table, a pair of these fun and funky lamps will bring the natural vibe over to that side of the space, and layering the top of the console with this striped runner will really make those lamps pop.

~ Accessories.

Fireplace Art.  Who says ceiling medallions can only be used on the ceiling?  After receiving a coat of shiny white spray paint, this architectural piece will look amazing centered in the inset above the fireplace.

Woven Stools.  Since this room needs to function for both kids and adults, these woven stools can be scattered around for extra lounging space but then stacked up and stored away when company comes over.

Pillows.  Pillows are the perfect way to bring the color palette onto the seating pieces (which are typically a single, neutral color).  When paired together, the jute-trimmed rectangular pillow and cozy blue chenille pillow add splashes of color to the leather sofa.  And my client can spice up the white armchairs in a flash with the bold stripes of these pillows.

Framed Photos.  The empty wall on the left side of the media center is a great place to display family photos.  Just blow up some great pics of the kiddos and place them in these oversized frames, which will look fab hung in a vertical line.

So there you have it!!  A comfortable, stylish space that the whole family can enjoy.  What do you guys think?
