The Flip: The Dining Room, Then & Now

After the great room, the next reveal on the agenda is the dining room!

Here’s how it looked 3 months ago:

The Flip: The Dining Room, Then & Now

Renovating the dining room was a breeze when compared to the great room.  All it needed was new bamboo floors, a column-ectomy and a little layout switcheroo.

The original dining room was in the smaller back room, and the larger room with the bay window was the formal living room.  Since the house already had a ginormous great room we thought the formal living room was a little unnecessary, so we took the opportunity to upgrade the dining room to the larger room so that the future homeowners can host big family dinners and all of that fun stuff (the room can actually accommodate a much larger table but we chose not to use our table’s leaves).  To us, the smaller adjoining room makes more sense as a sitting area or study, but we left the junction box so the future owners can always turn it back into a dining room by moving the chandelier if they’re so inclined.  A win-win in my book.

( The bay window is definitely my favorite part of the dining room, but I can’t take any credit for that since our only contribution to the window was having it cleaned! )

It’s amazing what a little paint and flooring can do!  What do you guys think?

New Mirror & Gratuitous Kitty Shots

Our dining room has now been almost entirely outfitted by my aunt.  Let me tell ya, it pays to have a cool aunt that doesn’t have room in her house for all of her cool stuff.

First there was the antique dining room table and chairs (that I spruced up with new fabric on the seats), and now we’ve got this awesome, oversized mirror with a beveled frame and brass detailing (that just so happens to pick up on the brass knobs on the buffet).  I’ve admired the mirror for years and when my aunt moved to a smaller home and said the mirror was up for grabs, you can be sure I started grabbing.  :)

I think the size of this mirror is much better above the buffet, don’t you?  (There’s the old mirror in the photo below.)

The old mirror was relegated to a guest room, and I love the look of the new (to me) mirror every time I see it.  Aren’t all the bevels awesome?  (Fun fact – the mirror originally belonged to my parents and used to hang in the powder room of their first house.)

And here’s one last kitty shot, since I just can’t get over how ridiculously cute (and lazy) they are.

I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to decor-related hand-me-downs.  What’s your best score?

P.S.  Be sure to check in tomorrow for a great giveaway!!!

Star Gazing

Now that I’ve seen this . . .

{ Apartment Therapy }

. . . I’m kind of in love.  The mirrored stars are similar to the ones in our powder room, and they’re hung like the artwork in our den.

It’s definitely a unique, quirky look but I could see the potential for it to appear kind of messy – what do you think about it?
