Our Flip: Granite and Marble and Travertine, Oh My!

Holy moly, Wednesday and Thursday were a flurry of tile-related craziness.  In the past 48 hours we have been to the granite fabricator, the contractor tile place (twice), two different discount tile places (and we went to one of them twice, in two different cities), another tile place, and Home Depot (to two different locations).  A freaking flurry of activity, I tell you!  Not to mention the FOUR times we went by the flip today.  This flipping stuff is serious business!

Luckily, there was some serious eye-candy along the way.  Check out some of these gorgeous slabs of granite that we saw at the contractor tile place:

Seriously, it’s crazy to think that such beautiful materials were dug up from the earth – it’s so awesome!  I drooled, I fawned, I caressed each and every slab.  Then I had a reality check and moved along . . . slowly.

By the end of Wednesday we had picked out the marble countertop for the master bath:

the travertine countertop for the jack and jill bath:

and the countertops for the kitchen.

We also picked out this gorgeous glass and marble tile backsplash for the kitchen (which we picked up on Thursday) – it looks fab with the granite and will be such a great focal point looking from the den into the kitchen:

For the bathroom off the kitchen, we picked out white subway tiles accented with taupe glass 2 x 2 tiles for the shower walls and 8 x 12 marble tiles in a herringbone pattern for the floor – I can’t wait to see how it turns out!!

The laundry area is tiled in a honed travertine (still waiting to be grouted):

The master bath will be done all in matching marble, with the floors done in 12 x 12 tiles, the shower walls in 3 x 6 subway tiles, and the shower floor in a tiny hexagon tile – I am beyond excited about this bathroom and I hope they’re finished soon so that I can show you pictures!!  Here’s how it’s looking right now (not too exciting):

We had a minor faux pas with the tile for the master shower – there was a miscommunication with the supplier and they gave us crema marfil porcelain tile rather than crema marfil marble tile.  Both of us just referred to crema marfil, and assumed we were talking about the same thing.  The mistake wasn’t discovered until we lugged those ridiculously heavy tiles back to the house – and the porcelain tile has a distinct grayish cast that doesn’t match the marble – oops!!  That’s the reason behind one of our many repeated trips to the tile place.  Lesson learned – always refer to the full name of the material when you’re speaking with a supplier, and always check inside the box before you leave the store.

Whew!  So busy but so fun.  And I still can’t believe how quickly things are moving along with the flip.  I swear, it’s going to be finished and ready to put on the market before I have a chance to blink!

So now you’ve heard what countertops we chose for the flip – what do you have in your house?

Riding The Subway (Tile)

As you may have realized by now, I have an obsession with white kitchens.  Surely I’m not alone on this one – they’re fresh, clean, classic . . . I could go on forever.

Due to my obsession, I knew that our remodeled kitchen was going to have gorgeous white cabinets.  This posed a bit of a dilemma – you see, I also have an obsession with white subway tile.

What do to?  Would the white cabinets and white backsplash be too much?  When we were planning our kitchen, I scoured the web for pictures of this combination and found some winners:

White Kitchen

Definitely not too much – the kitchens in those designer photos look dynamite.  But what about in our kitchen – the kitchen that looks right into our den with all of that awesome white paneling?  Would white cabinets, white subway tile, and white paneling look crazy?

In the end, we decided that it might look crazy.  Maybe it wouldn’t have – if we ever move, maybe we’ll pull the trigger on our next kitchen.  But for this kitchen, we decided to go for the best of both worlds – we chose a beautiful glass tile that combined the lovely clean lines of subway tile with a gorgeous, mossy green finish.

And do you know what?  I don’t miss that white subway tile for a minute.

Bargain Hunting

When we first started the renovation, I was convinced that certain design elements were just out of reach.  They were too expensive, couldn’t have’em, end of story, period.  After briefly mourning the loss of my fancy goodies, I decided to take matters into my own hands – me, be denied glass tile??  I think not!!

So the quest began.  A little time spent perusing discount websites, home improvement stores, etc. finally led to victory.  Here are a few of the awesome steals you can find with a just little effort:
P1170892

Example No. 1:  The oh-so-fancy sea blue glass tile in our master shower.  I am head over heels for this tile, and I can’t believe it’s mine!  Glass tile can be ridiculously expensive (up to $30 a square foot for some styles), and while we stayed away from the really pricey stuff we were able to steal this tile for less than half of its original price because it was being discontinued by the manufacturer.  Score!!

Example No. 2:  The undermount, scalloped porcelain sinks in our jack ‘n jill bath.  Would you have ever guessed that I found these beautiful babies for 20 bucks a piece at Lowe’s?  These suckers can easily go for up to $100 a piece, so I was beyond thrilled to polish off both sinks in that bathroom for under $40.

Example No. 3:  The blown glass pendant lights in our master bath.  These beauties are probably my favorite design element in our bathroom.  They have the exact same shade of blue as the shower tile, giving balance to the room and adding a fun pop of color on what’s otherwise essentially a tan wall.  The price, you might ask?  I was totally psyched when I found them at Lowe’s for about 1/4 of what they were selling for at two other stores that shall remain unnamed.

Don’t let something like a price tag keep you from having the awesome design of your dreams – do a little research and you’ll find amazing deals that you won’t be able to stop talking about.  Let me know what great steals you were able to find for your own home!!
