The MADI

Everybody loves a great party, and the engagement party that I went to last weekend was certainly no exception.  Not only was the party for one of my favorite couples (love ya, Jen & Kyle!!), but the location for the bash was a fabulous art museum.  Gorgeous eye candy while I celebrate my friends?  Sign me up!!

Here are a few of us frolicking amongst the art – and yes, we always stand according to height.  Always.

The MADI

This awesome event was held at The MADI Museum in the trendy Uptown area of Dallas.  MADI (pronounced mah-dee) is an avart-garde movement founded in Argentina in the 1940s – the art is reminiscent of Cubism with oodles of geometric shapes in bright colors (my fave!).  You’ll notice that much of the art is whimsical and modern, which is especially interesting since a law firm shares space with this unique museum – and the firm’s founder, Bill Masterson, actually created the museum.

The facade of the museum currently boasts the famed Arcadia sign, salvaged from the Arcadia Theater on Lower Greenville when it burned in June of 2006 by the Belmont Neighborhood Association.

Kilgore & Kilgore, the law firm that offices in the same building as The MADI, purchased and installed the Arcadia sign on the facade of the building and had it rededicated in March of 2007.  Prior to that time, the building looked like this:

Isn’t it magnificent?  Take a peek inside this totally unique museum:

This piece is my favorite, and I think it’s actually something that you could duplicate at home by drilling tiny holes in wooden blocks and hanging them from fishing line.  Wouldn’t this be an amazing mobile in a child’s room, or in a recessed niche?  The shadows it creates are phenomenal.

These paintings below are just stunning – to me, they almost look like textiles.

And random, I know, but I had to point out the eco-friendly (and stylish!) plates used by the lovely hostess – love’em!  You can check out the full line here.

So there’s your sneak peek inside a fabulous museum (and an equally fab engagement party!).  I love that this party was in a completely unique setting, one that totally reflects my friend’s personality and love of all things bold and graphic.  Cheers to the happy couple!!

Swoon-Worthy Rugs

I’m in love.  I’m swooning.  I’m falling on the floor.

While searching for contemporary rugs this weekend for a design consult client, I came across a slew of the most gorgeous, graphic area rugs.  They are truly fab.  And as you know, I’ve been scouring the planet for a rug for our den for months now, so I’m totally relieved to find that there is hope after all!!  Maybe the perfect rug does exist!

Here are a few of my faves – get ready to drool:

These grey rugs provide the perfect base for exciting pops of color.  When paired with an ivory sofa, splashes of raspberry, teal, canary yellow or spring green will really shine.

To me, these graphic black and white rugs are statement pieces that would look amazing with lacquered furniture, glass accents, and hits of bold color.  However, they are also versatile enough to support a more subdued palate with pale blues and wood tones.

These rugs are my faves.  I love the interlocking pattern on the rugs, some of which are a more subtle version of the Moroccan-inspired rugs which have been so popular.  These rugs would also pair easily with a variety of design styles, and are perfect for a casual yet hip den.  I have my eye on several of them as candidates for our den . . .

There’s no denying it – these tomato-red rugs are bold.  I think they would look best “played down,” with casual furniture such as an aged leather sofa and floor pillows.  Love’em or hate’em, they make a statement.

I love the loose pattern of these rugs, which would look fabulous accented with bright pops of yellow.

These rugs are from the Walt Disney collection . . . what??  I know, it’s bizarre, but they’re totally gorgeous.

I love the whimsy of these rugs.  I would pair the first, pale blue rug with a neutral beige sofa and play up the coral accents in the rug with splashes of coral throughout the room in pillows and lamps.  The spring green rug with the damask pattern is actually a kid’s rug, but I don’t think it needs to be confined to that category – it would be amazing as an accent rug in an all-white kitchen, as a runner in the hallway, or as the focal point of a calm living room.

To me, these beautiful rugs have a worldly flair that makes them the perfect substitute for a more traditional Oriental carpet.  They are a bit more modern, and bit more hip, and tons more fun than an Oriental rug, and they would be an amazing addition to an eclectic family room or refined dining room.

So are you guys as wowed as I am by all the fab rugs that are out there?  Are there any that you’re loving – or hating??  Time to dish!

Fab Fabrics: Update

Yay!

As you may recall, I’ve been eyeing some fabrics for some simple decorating projects around the house.  Only 5 days after ordering swatches of four different fabrics from Buy Fabrics, my awesome swatches have arrived!!

p10303281

These are pretty generous swatches, about 6 – 8 inches long and 3 inches wide – definitely enough fabric to decide whether or not you like it, and what a steal for only $2.50 per swatch!!

I think I’ve decided to go for two of the four swatches – the two on the right, which are the ones that I originally ran past you guys a few days ago.  The top right black and white graphic fabric will look great on the barstools in the kitchen, and the bottom right paisley fabric will really add some interest and color as curtains in the third bedroom.  At $13 and $10 a yard, they are a great price.

The swatches on the left didn’t make the cut, so I’m really glad that I checked out the swatches before committing to buying several yards of the fabrics!!  I was interested in the top left floral fabric for outdoor pillows for our covered patio, and the chocolate paisley fabric for curtains in the third bedroom – but after comparing them to the fabrics on the right they just don’t cut the mustard.

What do you guys think??
